Greenhouse vegetable production — Assur360 insurance

IN BRIEF

Vegetable Production Insurance

Market gardeners combine harvest risks (frost, drought, hail, diseases), structural risks (greenhouses, irrigation), and product liability (food poisoning).

La Financière Program: ASRA and crop insurance (FADQ Quebec) cover income losses based on objective indices. Combine with a private property and liability insurance policy.

Why a specific insurance for vegetable production?

La Financière agricole du Québec’s ASREC (Crop Insurance) and ASRA (Farm Income Stabilization Insurance) protect yield and income, but do not cover buildings, greenhouses, machinery, civil liability or business interruption. Hence the importance of a complementary agricultural commercial police.

🌡️

Frost, hail and storm

The ASREC covers the loss of yield, but the frost and hail endorsement on the commercial policy also protects your greenhouses, tunnels and irrigation infrastructure.

🏠

Greenhouses and tunnels

Broken polyethylene, snow load on the structure, roof collapse, winter heating failure threatening the crop. Insurable values from $50,000 to several million dollars.

🚜

Specialized Agricultural Equipment

Tractors, planters, harvesters, sprayers, irrigation systems, sorting cameras: mobile equipment and machinery breakdown coverage.

❄️

Cold rooms and warehouses

Loss of fridge = loss of harvest. Coverage of products in storage against fridge breakage, prolonged power outage and contamination.

📅

Concentrated seasonal income

A harvest is often worth 70% of the annual income. Business interruption insurance maintains your income if a loss strikes in the middle of the season.

🛡️

Product liability

If your lettuce contaminates a customer (E. coli, listeria), the Product Liability covers lawsuits, recalls and defence costs — essential for direct selling, government procurement and AAFC.

Essential Coverage for Vegetable Growers

🏚️

Buildings and greenhouses

Barn, shed, workshop, glass or polyethylene greenhouses, silos, warehouses.

🌱

Contents and stocks

Seeds, inputs, fertilizers, phytochemicals, packaging, harvested products.

🚜

Agricultural equipment

Tractors, hitch attachments, harvesters, irrigation systems, forklifts.

🧊

Breakdown of refrigerator machinery

Compressors, evaporators, HVAC systems for greenhouses — including loss of stock due to breakdown.

📉

Business interruption

Income lost during the restoration of a damaged building (typically 3 to 12 months).

🛡️

General liability and products

$2 to $5 million for visitors (pick-your-own, kiosk), products sold, agritourism activities.

Broker Advice — Combining FADQ + Commercial Policy

The FADQ (ASREC / ASRA) and agricultural commercial insurance are complementary. The best producers subscribe to both: FADQ for yield and income, commercial policy for buildings, equipment, RC, operating losses. Ask your broker to coordinate the two to eliminate duplication and fill in the real coverage gaps.

⚠️

Spring frost and greenhouse failures — Catastrophic scenarios

A late frost of -6°C in May can ruin an entire crop of strawberries or field tomatoes. A winter heating failure in the greenhouse destroys all production in 12 hours. A greenhouse collapse under the load of snow can cost $150,000 to $2 million. Without frost riders, fridge breakdowns and snow covers, these losses are excluded. Always check your tight endorsements and see.

Frequently asked questions

Is La Financière agricole’s ASREC sufficient?
No. ASREC only covers yield loss on insurable crops. It does not cover buildings, greenhouses, equipment, vehicles, civil liability or business interruption. An agricultural commercial police force is essential in addition.
What is the difference between ASREC, ASRA and ASSURPÊCHE?
The ASREC protects the yield (kilos harvested), the ASRA stabilizes the annual income (according to a cost of production), and the ASSURPÊCHE concerns fishermen. All three are managed by La Financière agricole and are separate from private commercial insurance.
Are my greenhouses covered against the snow load?
Yes, if you take out the snow and ice load endorsement (sometimes mandatory, sometimes optional depending on the insurer). Check that the boundary corresponds to the value of the complete reconstruction, including heating, irrigation and lighting.
Can spring frost be insured?
For crops: yes via ASREC (FADQ). For infrastructure (greenhouses, tunnels): via the freezing of pipes and heating failure. For orchards and small fruits: specific frost endorsement in certain policies.
Is product liability mandatory for retail?
Not required by law, but grocery chains, public markets and restaurants systematically require proof of CR products of $2 to $5 million. Cases of contamination (E. coli on lettuce) are responsible for up to several millions.
How much does it cost to insure a 5,000 m² greenhouse?
Between $8,000 and $25,000 per year depending on: type of greenhouse (glass vs. polyethylene), heating system, reconstruction value (often $400-$800/m²), added endorsements. Our broker prepares several scenarios to optimize the cost.
Is agritourism (pick-your-own, kiosk, maze) covered?
Yes, via agritourism endorsement added to the general civil liability. Covers visitors’ injuries, a child’s fall into a corn maze, food allergies. Recommended limit: $5 million if you welcome 1,000+ visitors per season.
Can I operate organically differently?
Yes. Some insurers offer organic discounts (Ecocert, Québec Vrai) because practices are considered more forward-looking. Also: GMO/pesticide contamination coverage in addition if organic crops are adjacent to conventional crops.
