Do you operate a beef cattle, buffalo or bison farm in Quebec? Between the loss of a herd by lightning, a barn fire in the middle of winter, injuries caused by an animal weighing more than 800 kg, and the requirements of a large ungulate enclosure, your risk profile is specific and poorly covered by generic policies. Assur360 is an independent comparator that puts you in touch with AMF-certified partner firms. The brokers of our partner firms compare more than 9 insurers specializing in agriculture to find the right coverage for your operation, at the best price and at no cost.

Essential Coverages

Livestock — accidental mortality and disease

Mortality by lightning, electrocution, attack by predators, enclosure accident, diagnosed disease and ordered euthanasia. Also covers catastrophic losses (barn fire).

Buildings — stables, barns, paddocks

Main barns, hay barns, outdoor feedlots, winter shelters, handling infrastructure (chutes, scales). Fire, wind, hail, snow collapse.

Livestock Equipment and Machinery

Tractors, mowers, round balers, feeding and handling equipment, hydraulic chutes. Mechanical breakdown and fire.

General liability $2 million to $5 million

Injuries caused by an escaped animal (vehicle collision with a bison or cattle), bites, charges, visitor accidents on the farm.

Stored forages, seeds and feed

Hay, silage, feed, finished grains stored. Covers fire, theft and loss by fermentation/heating.

Animal transport

Coverage during transport to the slaughterhouse, auction or exhibition. Includes liability for accidents involving transported livestock.

Job-specific risks

Risk profile of the profession

Large ungulates (especially bison) are powerful, unpredictable and expensive to replace (up to $5,000 per breeding head). A failing fence can cause a major road accident. A poorly ventilated barn increases the risk of fire.

Special coverage of bison

Bison farming requires reinforced pens and specific training. Many insurers impose an inspection and maximum herd limits. Specify your species at the time of submission.

One comprehensive policy

Most producers combine livestock, buildings, equipment, liability and feed into a single multi-risk farm policy — often more advantageous than separate policies.

Producers covered throughout Quebec

Our partner firms support farms in all regions of Quebec, including Saint-Hyacinthe, Drummondville, Granby, Victoriaville, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Joliette, Lévis and Trois-Rivières, as well as in rural areas — Beauce, Estrie, Centre-du-Québec, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Chaudière-Appalaches and Outaouais.

Frequently asked questions

Is my herd covered if an electrical storm kills several animals?
Yes, lightning is one of the causes covered by the “livestock mortality” endorsement. The compensation is based on the market value on the date of the loss, provided that an up-to-date inventory and evidence (veterinarian, summary autopsy) are available.
If a bison escapes and causes a road accident, am I responsible?
Yes, as an owner you are responsible for damage caused by an escaped animal. Commercial liability covers these situations, but the limits should be high ($5 million recommended) because an accident involving a large ungulate can result in serious bodily injury.
Is only one pet disease covered?
The “accidental mortality and disease” endorsement generally covers the disease diagnosed by the veterinarian AND the euthanasia ordered. The natural death of an elderly animal is excluded.
How much does insurance cost for a cattle, buffalo or bison farm in Quebec?
The premium varies depending on the number of head, species, herd value, your buildings, claim history and limits chosen. As an indication, a medium-sized farm often pays between $3,500 and $10,000 per year, but the exact premium is established after analyzing your file.
Do I need special coverage for transport to the slaughterhouse?
Yes, the “transport of animals” endorsement covers losses along the way (trailer accident, suffocation due to deficient ventilation). Without this endorsement, the herd is no longer covered as soon as it leaves your farm.
My stable destroyed by fire: how much will I be compensated?
Depending on the basis of coverage chosen: replacement cost (full replacement) or depreciated value (use value). For a productive barn, replacement cost is recommended — the difference in premium is small and the difference in compensation can be as much as 40%.
If an epidemic orders the slaughter of my herd, am I covered?
The CFIA (Canadian Food Inspection Agency) pays compensation for ordered slaughter. Your private policy can TOP UP for the uncovered portion (loss of earnings during herd rebuilding).
Are my electrified enclosures covered in case of vandalism?
Yes, livestock infrastructure (fences, chutes, arenas) is covered by the “equipment and facilities” guarantee. Vandalism covered with the “theft and vandalism” endorsement.
