Essential Coverages

Buildings — pig barns and slurry pits

Farrowing, fattening and finishing pigsties, manure pits, feed silos. Fire, wind, hail, water damage, structural collapse.

Pig herd — mortality and epidemic

Mortality due to ventilation failure, fire, diagnosed disease (PRRS, DEP, circovirus). Epidemic coverage often in a separate endorsement with waiting period.

Ventilation and heating equipment

Ventilation systems (fans, sensors, alarms), radiant or tube heating, PLCs, CO₂ and ammonia sensors. Mechanical breakdown and fire.

General + Environmental Liability

Classic RC $2 to $5 million + agricultural pollution endorsement for slurry leaks, watercourse contamination, neighbourhood complaints related to odours.

Business interruption

If a disaster renders your building unusable, business interruption compensates for the lost revenue during the crawl space and reconstruction (often 6 to 12 months).

Stored food and inputs

Feed, premixes, supplements, additives stored on the farm. Fire, theft and accidental contamination cover.

Job-specific risks

Risk profile of the profession

Animal density makes pig farms extremely sensitive to ventilation. A 30-minute outage in the summer can lead to massive heat losses. Epidemics spread quickly — biosecurity is central.

The risk of pollution/slurry

An overflow from a slurry pit or a leak into a watercourse can generate 6-figure claims and fines from the Ministry of the Environment (MELCCFP). The pollution endorsement is non-negotiable.

One comprehensive policy

Most hog producers bundle buildings, livestock, equipment, RC, environment and business interruption into a single farm comprehensive policy — often more advantageous and simpler.

Producers covered throughout Quebec

Our partner firms support farms in all regions of Quebec, including Saint-Hyacinthe, Drummondville, Granby, Victoriaville, Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Joliette, Lévis and Trois-Rivières, as well as in rural areas — Beauce, Estrie, Centre-du-Québec, Bas-Saint-Laurent, Saguenay–Lac-Saint-Jean, Chaudière-Appalaches and Outaouais.

Frequently asked questions

If the ventilation fails and I lose animals, am I covered?
Yes, ventilation failure is generally covered by the “livestock mortality” endorsement. You must demonstrate that the failure was the result of a covered event (mechanical breakdown, electrical failure, lightning).
Is an epidemic like PED covered?
The animal epidemic is covered by a separate endorsement, often with a waiting period (30 to 90 days after subscription) and a high deductible. Explicitly ask for outbreak coverage when submitting.
Is my slurry pit overflow covered?
With the “agricultural pollution” or “environmental responsibility” endorsement, yes. Without this amendment, pollution is excluded by the standard RC. Recommended limit: $1 to $2 million minimum for pollution.
How much does insurance cost for a hog farm in Quebec?
The premium varies according to the size of the farm (number of places), the type of operation (farrowing, fattening), the value of the buildings and ventilation, your history and the limits chosen. As a guideline, the average farm often pays between $6,000 and $18,000 per year, but the exact premium is determined after analyzing your file.
Am I responsible if my odors cause complaints from the neighborhood?
The neighbourhood can sue for neighbourhood disturbances. Standard commercial liability generally excludes these claims — the “agricultural pollution and nuisance” endorsement covers them, as long as your operation meets the standards.
Are my high-tech ventilation systems covered against mechanical breakdown?
Yes, with the “machine breakdown” endorsement that covers PLCs, sensors and fans against electrical and mechanical breakdown — often at replacement value.
Is business interruption necessary for a pig farm?
Essential. After a major fire, the time to rebuild and obtain a certificate of installation can be up to 12 months. Without interruption of business, the fixed costs (interest, taxes, minimum labour) remain at your expense.
Am I covered if a MAPAQ inspection orders the slaughter of my herd?
The CFIA and MAPAQ pay compensation for the slaughter ordered in the event of reportable diseases. Your policy can top up for the uncovered portion and the loss of income during restocking.
