In Quebec, the Q.P.F. No. 5 endorsement (Quebec Policy Form) is the official mechanism to protect the value of a vehicle in the event of a total loss. There are three versions — 5a, 5b and 5c — and each one is aimed at a different situation. Add to that the replacement warranties sold by dealers (GARE, Guardian, SecuriKey…), and it becomes difficult to know what to choose. This free guidance tool, designed by Assur360 brokers ( AMF certified firm), gives you the most relevant recommendation in less than 2 minutes.

Understanding the 3 Q.P.F. n°5 Endorsements

The Q.P.F. n°5 is an endorsement, i.e. an addition to your standard car insurance policy. It changes the way in which the insurer compensates in the event of a total loss (theft not recovered or damage greater than the cost of repair). The three versions — 5a, 5b and 5c — are aimed at different profiles.

🆕

Q.P.F. 5a — Replacement Cost

For whom? New vehicles (0 km) purchased from a dealership. Available in 24, 48 or 60 month options depending on the insurer.

What it does: In the event of a total loss within the period covered, the insurer will reimburse the purchase price new or replace it with an equivalent new vehicle from the current year.

💎

Q.P.F. 5b — Agreed Value

For whom? Collector’s, antique, modified or prestige vehicles whose market value does not reflect the actual value.

What it does: You and the insurer agree in advance on a fixed value that will be paid in full in the event of a total loss, without discussion.

🔁

Q.P.F. 5c — Limited depreciation

For whom? Used vehicles less than 5 years old at the time of purchase (the limit varies depending on the insurer).

What it does: Instead of the market value (which is often very low), the insurer pays the cost of an equivalent vehicle at the time of the loss — the depreciation is “limited.”

Assur360 Brokers’ Advice

In 9 out of 10 cases, the F.P.Q. n°5 via your insurance policy is more advantageous than a replacement warranty sold by the dealership: annual cost instead of a single amount, cancellable at any time, portable on a new vehicle, no deductible in the event of a total loss, and regulated by the AMF. Refuse the addition to the financing and take out the Q.P.F. 5 endorsement through your broker.

3 numerical examples — which protection to choose?

EXAMPLE 1

New 2026 Toyota RAV4 — $42,000

Quebec City family, 5-year conservation, 18,000 km/year.

→ Q.P.F. 5a 60-month option ($≈ $140/year)

EXAMPLE 2

Used 2023 Honda CR-V — $32,000

Young professional, Montreal, second-hand purchase at 3 years old.

→ Q.P.F. 5c limited depreciation ($≈ $120/year)

EXAMPLE 3

Restored 1968 Mustang — value $65,000

Collector, limited use in summer, controlled garage.

→ Q.P.F. 5b agreed value (≈ $350/year, specialized insurer)

⚠️

Pitfalls to avoid at all costs

1. Never accept a replacement warranty sold by the dealership without comparing it with your broker’s Q.P.F. No. 5. 2. On vehicles over $80,000, check the limits — some insurers refuse F.P.Q. 5a. 3. F.P.Q. 5a does not cover commercial uses: Uber, delivery, representative → take a commercial policy. 4. The dealer’s warranty often has a hidden deductible ($500 to $1,500) that does not exist in F.P.Q. 5. 5. Never sign a financing offer that contains a “free” replacement guarantee: it is added to the amount financed, so you pay with interest over 5-7 years.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between F.P.Q. 5a and F.P.Q. 5c?
Q.P.F. 5a applies exclusively to new vehicles (0 km) purchased directly from the dealership. In the event of a total loss within the period covered (24, 48 or 60 months), it will refund the purchase price new or replace it with an equivalent new vehicle. Q.P.F. 5c applies to used vehicles less than 5 years old: it limits depreciation by guaranteeing the cost of an equivalent vehicle at the time of the loss, rather than the depressed market value.
Is the F.P.Q. 5a really necessary?
For a new vehicle, yes — highly recommended. A vehicle loses 20 to 30% of its value in the 1st year (Canadian Black Book, 2025). In the event of a total loss in the 1st year without Q.P.F. 5a, the insurer pays the market value — often 25% less than the price paid. On a $40,000 vehicle, that’s $10,000 lost for an annual premium of $≈,120.
What is the difference between Q.P.F. 5 and the dealer’s replacement warranty?
Q.P.F. No. 5 is an insurance endorsement regulated by the AMF, payable annually ($60-180), cancellable at any time and portable on a new vehicle. The dealer’s replacement warranty (GARE, Guardian, SecuriKey, AssurExperts) is an unregulated product sold at the time of purchase, costs $1,500 to $3,500 at once (often financed with interest), difficult to cancel, tied to the specific vehicle and often includes a deductible. In most cases, the F.P.Q. 5 is more advantageous.
Can I void the dealer warranty and take F.P.Q. 5 instead?
Yes, in most cases. Quebec’s Consumer Protection Act generally allows cancellations within 10 days of the purchase with a full refund. After 10 days, a prorated refund is possible according to the terms of the contract. Call your dealer and ask for the cancellation form, then contact Assur360 to add the Q.P.F. 5 endorsement to your policy.
How much does the F.P.Q. 5 cost per year?
Premiums vary depending on the insurer, the value of the vehicle, your driving record and the region. Orders of magnitude 2026: F.P.Q. 5a 24-month option: $60-90/year · 48-month option: $90-140/year · 60-month option: $120-180/year. Q.P.F. 5c : $80-180/year depending on the age of the vehicle. Q.P.F. 5b (agreed value): variable according to value — request a specialized quote. Use our car quote form for the exact price.
Does F.P.Q. 5 apply if I rent my car?
Yes — and it’s highly recommended for rental. In the event of a total loss of a leased vehicle, you are responsible for the “gap” between the market value paid by the insurer and the residual balance of the lease contract (often several thousand dollars). F.P.Q. 5a covers this difference by reimbursing the new purchase price. Many rental companies even require F.P.Q. 5a as a condition of the contract.
Is the F.P.Q. 5c available for all used vehicles?
No. Most insurers in Quebec impose an age limit of 5 years on purchase (some accept up to 7 years). Exclusions also apply to vehicles with a major history (title rebuilt, prior total loss), commercial vehicles, and vehicles with very high mileage. Ask your Assur360 broker for a specific check on your vehicle.
F.P.Q. 5b: How is the “agreed value” determined?
The agreed value is established jointly by you and the insurer, usually using a professional appraisal (collector car expert, Barrett-Jackson auction report, Hagerty, RM Sotheby’s, or a local firm such as Volo Auto Museum). Typically considered: year, model, restoration, mileage, originality of parts, mechanical and bodywork condition, history. This value is reviewed at each renewal.
Is this decision tree official?
No, it is a guidance tool based on the general rules of the Quebec market in 2026. Each insurer (Intact, Desjardins, Promutuel, SSQ, Wawanesa, La Capitale, etc.) applies its own criteria, limits and exclusions. For a binding recommendation, consult an AMF-certified broker. Assur360 offers a free, independent service — contact us.
If I have an accident, how does compensation work with F.P.Q. 5a?
The insurer first assesses whether it is a total loss (damage greater than the cost of repair or vehicle not recovered after theft). If yes, there are two options: (1) direct replacement with a new vehicle equivalent to the current year of the same model and options, or (2) refund of the new purchase price stated in the contract. You keep the driver assistance of a replacement vehicle for the duration of the assessment (if coverage is added).
