The joint report in Quebec: obligation, operation, official application

The joint report of automobile accident is a standardized document in Quebec, provided by the Groupement des assureurs automobiles (GAA). It is used to quickly establish the circumstances of an accident and speeds up the settlement of the claim with your insurer. Since 2020, the GAA’s official “Joint Report” mobile application has made it possible to fill, sign and electronically transmit the report directly to the insurers of both parties. In Quebec, this document does not establish criminal liability, but is used by insurers to enforce the Direct Indemnity Agreement (DTA).

Traditional paper document

Available free of charge from all insurers and on gaa.qc.ca. Double-sided, one copy per part. Handwritten signature required.

Mobile App Joint Report

Free, official, iOS and Android. Guided filling, integrated photos, automatic sending to the 2 insurers. The fastest in 2026.

Steps in case of injury

If you are injured, call 911 first. The police report replaces/supplements the report. The SAAQ is responsible for bodily injury in Quebec (no-fault regime).

How to do it in 2026

1

Secure the premises

Turn on the hazard lights, place the triangle if possible. Clear the road if no injuries and rolling cars. Your safety first.

2

Document in photos

Photograph the position of the vehicles, the damage, the plates, the license and insurance of the other party, the surroundings (signage, speed limit).

3

Fill in the report

With the GAA app or on paper. Both drivers must sign. If you disagree, write your version on the back and sign anyway.

4

Send to your insurer

The app sends automatically. On paper, submit within 48 hours. Your Assur360 broker is with you every step of the way.

⚠️ NEVER leave the premises without exchanging information

In Quebec, the offence of hit-and-run (s. 252 Criminal Code) is punishable by imprisonment. Even a small skirmish requires an exchange of information. If the other driver refuses to identify himself, call the police immediately.

Frequently asked questions

Is the joint report mandatory in Quebec?
Not legally mandatory, but highly recommended. If you don’t make a statement, your insurer may delay or complicate the settlement.
What if the other driver refuses to sign?
Note ALL the details: plate, make/model/color, leaked steering. Report to the police within 24 hours and contact your broker.
Where can I download the Joint Report app?
On the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android). Search for “Joint report” by the Groupement des assureurs automobiles (GAA). Free.
Can I fill out the report later?
Ideally on the scene with the other party. If impossible, within 48 hours. Beyond that, your insurer may ask for more proof.
Does the report establish liability?
No, not directly. He describes the facts. Your insurer then applies the GAA’s Direct Indemnity Agreement (DCA) to determine liability.
What is the Direct Compensation Agreement (DCA)?
An agreement between Quebec insurers that allows each driver to be compensated by HIS own insurer, regardless of the fault. Simplifies settlements.
Should I call the police?
Mandatory if: injury, hit-and-run, intoxicated driver, more than $2,000 in estimated damage, or damage to public property.
Who pays for the SAAQ vs. my insurer?
The SAAQ compensates bodily injuries (Quebec no-fault public plan). Your private insurer covers physical damage to the vehicle.
How long does my insurer take to settle?
Clear Material Damage: 1 to 3 weeks. Complex cases: 1 to 3 months. Your Assur360 broker can follow up if there is too much delay.
