IN BRIEF

Yacht insurance: high-end and international coverage

Yacht insurance covers luxury boats (motor or sailboat) of 40 feet and more. It includes the hull, machinery, crew, extended civil liability and often international navigation (Caribbean, Florida, Bahamas).

Particularity: yachts sailing in cyclone zones (June to November) must be repositioned south of the 12th parallel or covered by a specific tropical storm endorsement.

What is a yacht for an insurer?

Specialized insurers treat as a yacht any pleasure craft of at least 30 feet (9 m), with a habitable cabin, onboard equipment (galley, marine toilet, sleeping accommodation) and a value generally greater than $75,000. From this threshold, pricing no longer follows a standard pleasure boat grid — each policy is negotiated with a policyholder based on the boat, owner profile and navigation area.

Essential Protections of Yacht Insurance

Hull and machinery

Damage to the hull, engines (inboard, V-drive, IPS, sail-drive), sails, rigging, dinghy or keel. Replacement or repair on an accredited site.

🛡️

Civil liability

Protection & Indemnity (P&I) minimum $2 million — damage to third parties, pollution (fuel, sewage), injuries on board or in the water.

💎

Equipment on board

Electronics (radar, plotter, autopilot), tender/tender with engine, fishing equipment, boards, SUP, bicycles — listed with declared values.

Permanent anchorage

Marina/dock/buoy cover — attachment damage, storm, electrical storm, ice. The anchorage location must be approved by the insurer.

🌀

Hurricane / haul-out plan

Mandatory for cruising to the Caribbean, Florida or the US East Coast.

🏠

Winter Storage

Cover all year round during the wintering on land (marina, shipyard). Protection against theft, vandalism, fire and damage during lifting/craneing.

Agreed Value vs Actual Cash Value — the key decision

For a yacht, the choice of the type of value is more important than the premium itself. Both approaches:

💎 Agreed Value

You and the insurer set the value of the yacht (e.g. $350,000) in advance. In the event of a total loss, you receive this amount without depreciation. Ideal for high value 30’+ yachts. ~15-20% higher premium.

📉 Actual Cash Value (overnight value)

In the event of a total loss, the insurer pays the market value at the time of the loss — with depreciation. Lower premium but potentially lower compensation at the time of purchase.

Cruising area: where can you sail?

The cruising area is the geographical area covered by your policy. Leaving the zone = no protection. Typical options for a Quebec-based yacht:

East Coast haul-out plan
Cruising areaExample navigationAdditional premium
Inland Waters QCLake Memphremagog, Saint John, St. Lawrence River (QC-Sorel)Base
Great LakesLake Ontario, Erie, Huron, Michigan+10 to 15%
CanadianMaritimes, Gaspésie, Newfoundland+15 to 25%
ICW + FloridaIntracoastal Waterway, Florida (Off-Hurricane Season)+25 to 40%

Steps to purchase your yacht insurance

1

Gather documentation

Purchase invoice, HIN (Hull ID), recent survey/expertise (mandatory for 5+ year old yacht), equipment list, construction certificate, claims history.

2

Declare your experience

PCOC, certifications (Sail Canada, RYA Day Skipper/Yachtmaster), years of experience, previous boat type. Yacht insurers require experience commensurate with size.

3

Choose cruising area and value

Decide Agreed vs Actual, specify area (inland waters, ICW, Caribbean) and anchorage location. The marina address is required with GPS coordinates.

4

Receive quotes and sign

An Assur360 broker negotiates with specialized underwriters (Markel, Pantaenius, Intact Commercial Marine). Issue of policy within 48-72 hours after acceptance.

💡

Survey / marine expertise

For a yacht 5 years old or more, the insurer almost always requires a recent survey (less than 12-24 months) signed by an accredited marine surveyor (SAMS, NAMS). Cost: $15-25 per foot. This is the basis for calculating the agreed value and exclusions.

Bonds and hurricane plan

⚠️

Mandatory hurricane plan south of the 30th parallel

If your yacht sails in Florida, the Caribbean or the Bahamas between June 1 and November 30, the police require a written haul-out plan. Without a documented plan, the insurer will deny any claim related to a hurricane, even a boat moored at a residential dock.

Frequently Asked Questions — Yacht Insurance Quebec

At what size does my boat become a yacht?
Most specialist insurers consider a boat to be a yacht from 30 feet (9 m) with a habitable cabin. Below this threshold, the pricing follows the standard pleasure boat grid. Above that, the policy becomes tailor-made with individual underwriting.
How much does yacht insurance cost in Quebec?
As a general rule, expect between 1% and 2% of the value per year in inland waters, with Agreed Value and experience. Example: $250,000 yacht = $2,500 to $5,000. The coefficients are rising for the ICW, Florida and the Caribbean. Get your price in 3 minutes.
Is the marine survey still mandatory?
For a new yacht or a yacht less than 5 years old, the survey is generally not required (the invoice and the construction certificate are sufficient). For a yacht 5 years and older, a recent survey (12-24 months) signed by a SAMS or NAMS accredited surveyor is almost always required.
What is the difference between Agreed Value and Actual Cash Value?
With Agreed Value, the replacement value is fixed in advance in the policy – in the event of a total loss, you receive this amount without depreciation. With Actual Cash Value, the insurer pays the market value on the day of the loss (with depreciation). For a yacht, Agreed Value is almost always recommended despite a slightly higher premium.
Can I sail in Florida with my Quebec yacht insurance?
Yes, but your policy must explicitly declare the ICW + Florida cruising area (+25-40% premium). And if you’re sailing between June 1 and November 30, you must provide a written hurricane plan — haul-out at an accredited yard or relocation north of the 30th parallel.
Is the paid crew covered?
Yes, with the addition of a specific Jones Act / crew coverage . Mandatory if you employ a paid captain, deckhand, or steward. Yachts over 55 feet or with permanent crew must declare each member with certifications (STCW, RYA, etc.).
Is the tender/tender covered?
Yes, if it is declared in the policy with make, model, engine and value. A fiber tender with a 50 hp outboard motor can be worth $15,000-25,000 — it must be listed as onboard equipment to be covered against theft or damage.
What if I move my yacht to another marina?
You must notify your Assur360 broker immediately — the anchorage address is listed in the policy and an undeclared change may result in a disqualification. Call 1-866-357-4451 or request an endorsement by email before changing locations.
