List of critical illnesses covered by critical illness insurance (and exclusions)

Guide 2026 · Quebec

Cancer, stroke, heart attack and more: here’s what’s covered, what’s partially covered, and what’s excluded.

Compare plans

Critical illness insurance does not cover “all illnesses”. It pays a lump sum when the diagnosis corresponds to the precise definition of the contract. Here are the main families of illnesses generally covered and the points to read closely.

The main families of diseases covered

Extended policies in Canada cover up to 24 critical illnesses and conditions. The most common are listed below.

🎗️ Major cancers

Breast, colon, lung, prostate, ovaries, leukemia, lymphoma, according to the definitions of the contract.

❤️ Heart conditions

Heart attack, coronary artery bypass surgery, valve replacement, heart transplant.

🧠 Neurological

Stroke, Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, ALS, benign brain tumor.

🫁 Vital and other organs

Renal failure, major organ transplant, blindness, deafness, paralysis, severe burns.

Early-stage cancers: pay attention to the definition

Non-invasive or very early-stage cancers are often excluded or only eligible for partial payment, depending on the contract. This is one of the points that varies the most from one insurer to another: read the exact definition before choosing.

Exclusions and conditions to be aware of

Survival period : Many policies require survival for a certain number of days after diagnosis (often 30 days).

Waiting period : some cases are not covered during the first few days or months.

Pre-existing conditions : A previously diagnosed or undeclared illness may lead to denial of the benefit.

Medical definitions : A diagnosis is only paid for if it meets the criteria of the contract, which can be strict.

How to read a definition of disease

Each covered disease has a specific medical definition. For example, a stroke must generally cause lasting neurological sequelae, and a heart attack must meet recognized diagnostic criteria. An event that resembles the disease but does not meet the criteria may not be paid.

Before subscribing, ask for the complete list of definitions: it is this document, not the leaflet, that determines the payment.

Partial payments

Some policies provide for a partial payment for less serious situations, such as certain early cancers or angioplasty. The amount is often a percentage of the capital, with a ceiling. If this coverage is important to you, compare it from one insurer to another.

Good to know: The illnesses covered and their definitions vary depending on the insurer and the contract. Only the text of the contract is authentic.

Frequently asked questions

How many illnesses does critical illness insurance cover?
Extended policies cover up to 24 critical illnesses and conditions. Basic policies cover less, often the three main ones: cancer, stroke and heart attack.
Is cancer still covered?
Invasive cancers are usually covered. Non-invasive or very early-stage cancers may be excluded or partially paid, depending on the contract.
What is a survival period?
This is the amount of time you have to stay alive after diagnosis for the benefit to be paid. It is often around 30 days, but this varies.
Is a previously diagnosed disease covered?
Usually not, or it can be excluded. Declare all your history: An incorrect declaration may result in the denial of the benefit.
Are diseases that are not on the list covered?
No. Only the diseases and conditions listed in the contract, according to their definitions, entitle you to the capital.
How to compare contracts?
Compare the number of illnesses, definitions, partial payments, survival period and exclusions. An advisor from a partner firm can do this with you.
