A few dozen dollars a month at 30, more than $200 at 60: this is what makes the price vary.
Compare plansThe price of critical illness insurance depends mainly on your age, gender, smoking, capital and duration of coverage. Here are indicative monthly premiums and the factors that make the bill go up or down.
Indicative monthly premiums according to age
Examples for a $100,000 principal, extended coverage (25 illnesses), coverage up to age 75, non-smoker. These numbers serve as a benchmark: your exact price depends on your profile and the insurer.
| Age at subscription | Non-smoking female | Non-smoking male | With premium return |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 years | $22 / month | $28 / month | + 40 to 55% |
| 40 years old | $46 / month | $62 / month | + 40 to 55% |
| 50 years | $102 / month | $148 / month | + 45 to 60% |
| 60 years old | $225 / month | $330 / month | + 50 to 65% |

What Affects Your Premium
Age : the main factor. The earlier you take out, the lower the starting bonus.
Smoking : Smokers usually pay significantly more.
The face amount : $50,000, $100,000 or $250,000 changes the premium roughly proportionally.
The term and the formula : coverage at age 75, for life or with a maturity of 10 or 20 years does not have the same cost.
Options : the refund of premium increases the premium, sometimes by 40 to 65% according to our indicative table.
Health status and family history : these influence acceptance and pricing.
How to pay less without losing the essentials
Compare several insurers with the same capital and the same term. Ask for the formula without unnecessary options. Choose a realistic capital: in general, between one and two years of income plus immediate debts. Take out earlier, when possible, to set a lower premium.
Example: the difference between two profiles
At age 30, a non-smoking woman may have an indicative premium of about $22 per month for $100,000; at age 50, the same coverage is around $102. Waiting twenty years therefore multiplies the premium by more than four, not to mention the risk of no longer being insurable if health changes.
A lower premium today is also a guaranteed premium for the chosen term: this is often the strongest argument for not postponing the decision.
Questions to ask before comparing
Does the price include 25 illnesses or only the top three? Is the premium guaranteed until the end of the contract? What are the exclusions and payment terms? Two quotes at the same price can offer very different coverages: always compare the definitions, not just the premium.
Good to know: The amounts displayed are indicative and do not constitute an offer. Only a quote based on your profile gives an exact price.
