Factors that influence the premium

Why It MattersFactor
Type of sportContact or high-risk sports (martial arts, hockey, rugby) have a different profile than badminton or yoga.
Number of participantsThe larger the pool of members or participants, the greater the exposure to risk.
Duration and frequencyA weekend tournament does not have the same bonus as a club that operates 12 months a year.
Amateur, semi-professional, professional — each level influences the recommended limits.
Arena, outdoors, private room, municipal infrastructure — each environment has its own risks.
Alow loss record promotes more advantageous conditions at renewal.

The bonuses mentioned on the site are indicative. The actual cost is determined after analysis of the file by the partner firm.

💡

Good to know before your request

Prepare in advance: the precise description of the activity, the expected number of participants or members, the list of places used, the dates and the frequency. The more precise the file, the more faithful the quote will be to your real needs.

If your federation requires a certificate of insurance with specific limits (often $2 million or $5 million in civil liability), mention this from the start.

⚠️ Organizing without insurance means risking a lot

A serious injury, damage to leased infrastructure, or a lawsuit by a participant can add up to hundreds of thousands of dollars. Without the right police, the organization, its directors, and even its volunteers can be held personally liable. A well-constructed insurance is, in most cases, required by federations, municipalities or sponsors.

Frequently asked questions

What type of insurance do you need for an amateur sports club?
The basis is general liability insurance. Most clubs add coverage for directors and officers, equipment, and accident and sickness coverage for members. The recommended limits depend on the sport and the number of participants.
Does a federation already cover my members?
Several Quebec federations offer basic coverage to their affiliated members. However, this protection often leaves gaps (off-season events, non-sanctioned activities, equipment, additional liability). An analysis by a specialized broker can bridge these gaps.
How much does insurance cost for a sports tournament?
The prize varies depending on the sport, the number of participants, the duration of the tournament, the location and the limits requested. A weekend recreational tournament does not have the same profile as a provincial championship. The only way to have a reliable figure is a personalized quote.
Are event volunteers covered?
Yes, good event insurance covers volunteers in the tasks assigned to them. It is important to keep an up-to-date list of names and to clearly define their role in the organization.
Which high-risk sports are insurable?
Martial arts, climbing, hockey, rugby, motorsports and many other high-risk disciplines are insurable. The contract will be adapted to the safety practices in place: supervision, equipment, level of participants, medical supervision.
A municipality requires me to provide proof of insurance, what should I do?
Ask the municipality for the standard certificate it requires (limits, mention as an additional insured person, duration). Send this document to the broker of a partner firm: he or she will be able to issue a compliant certificate quickly.
Is the athletes’ personal equipment covered?
A member’s personal equipment is usually covered by their own home insurance. Sports insurance covers equipment owned by the organization. Some specialty policies allow coverage to be extended to equipment that is rented or loaned to members.
How far before an event should I request my submission?
Ideally 4 to 8 weeks before the date. For a complex event (international, large infrastructures, multi-sites), allow 2 to 3 months. For a simpler local tournament, a few days may be enough — but sooner is better.
Can I shop before I commit?
Absolutely. The quote is non-binding and free of charge. You are free to compare several offers and choose the coverage that best suits your needs and budget.
