Why choose Assur360 for your catamaran

Catamarans and trimarans — whether sailing (Lagoon, Fountaine-Pajot, Leopard) or motor (Aquila, World Cat) — have insurance features that general brokers have little control over. Their double width, two hulls (or three), sailmaking and often offshore navigation (Bahamas, West Indies) require specialized insurance policies.

Assur360 collaborates with specialized marine programs (Marine Underwriters, Intact Marine, Northbridge, Markel) for average premiums of $1,200 to $4,500/year depending on size and value. All our brokers are AMF certified. Consult our AMF certification and our Chamber of Insurance references.

Frequently Asked Questions — Catamaran and Trimaran Insurance in Quebec

1. How much does catamaran insurance cost in Quebec?

For a 40-foot sailing catamaran valued at $300,000, expect to pay around $1,400 to $2,600/year in coastal waters. A similarly sized motor catamaran costs more ($2,200 – $4,000) due to the value of the two engines.

2. Are the trimarans (Corsair, Dragonfly) insurable?

Yes. Recreational trimarans (Corsair 31, Dragonfly 32, Neel 43) are insured like catamarans. Racing trimarans (ORMA, MOD70) require a specialized racing policy — we work with Lloyd’s programs for this segment.

3. Is my sailmaker included in the policy?

Under an all-risk policy, yes — mainsail, jibs, gennakers, spinnakers are covered against accidental tearing, theft, and storm. Normal wear and progressive UV damage remain excluded.

4. Can I sail in the Bahamas and the West Indies?

Yes, with a “Caribbean navigation” endorsement (approximately 20-30% surcharge). Your policy must explicitly cover cyclone zones — check the “territory” section and hurricane exclusion dates (June to November).

5. Is my catamaran covered during the winter yard?

Yes, on land or under a tarp. Covers theft, vandalism, fire, snow damage, and collapse. Excluded if you do not winterize the engines according to standards.

6. What experience is required to insure a 45-footer?

Most insurers require RYA Yachtmaster certification, Offshore Cruising or equivalent, plus 500 documented hours at the helm of multihulls. Without experience, a professional skipper may be required for the first 3 trips.

7. How are the premiums calculated on multihulls?

Insured value × risk coefficient (hull type, year, engine) × geographic zone modifier × experience modifier. Recent catamarans (2020+) with an experienced skipper receive the best premiums.

8. Is grounding damage covered?

Yes, accidental grounding (course error, unmarked reef) is covered. Voluntary grounding (for maintenance, for example) or due to gross negligence (alcohol, faulty chart) is excluded.

9. Can I rent my catamaran (charter)?

Only with a commercial charter policy — very different from a recreational policy. We underwrite charters through specialized Lloyd’s programs (approximately 3-5% of the insured value per year).

10. Is the boat launch trailer covered?

For trailerable sport cats (Stiletto, folding Corsair), yes via trailer endorsement. For larger units, the towing trailer is used by the yard and covered by its own commercial insurance.
