CLAIM GUIDE

Boat accident: what to do?

Collision, sinking, theft, damage: step-by-step procedure to manage a marine claim in Quebec and maximize your compensation.

Boat insurance assistance

A marine disaster requires a quick and methodical response. Here are the best practices to protect your rights and compensation with your partner firm.

1. Secure people

Human lives first. If necessary, contact the Coast Guard (VHF channel 16) or 911. Stabilizing injuries, life jackets for all.

2. Document immediately

Photos from all angles (before the conditions changed), videos, GPS coordinates. Note the time, weather conditions, indicators, identity of the other boats involved.

3. Exchange information

With the other driver (in the event of a collision): name, address, boat registration, PCOC, name of the insurer and policy number. DO NOT accept liability.

4. Report to the authorities if necessary

Mandatory if: injury, death, damage > $5,000, pollution, lost boat. Call Transport Canada (TSB). For thefts: SQ or local police.

5. Contact your broker quickly

Ideally within 24 to 48 hours. The shorter the deadline, the more credible the claim. Keep all documents (photos, police reports, written testimonies).

6. Have the damage assessed

A marine surveyor mandated by the insurer will evaluate. Ask to be present. If you disagree, you are entitled to a second opinion (sometimes at your own expense).

7. Follow-up on the claim

Allow 4 to 12 weeks for a simple claim, 3 to 12 months for complex cases (unresolved theft, liability dispute). Follow up with your broker on a regular basis.

Frequently asked questions

Does my insurance cover sea towing?
Often an option, sometimes included. Check your contract. Otherwise, without towing insurance, these costs can exceed $500 to $2,000.
What if the other boat flees after a collision?
Document everything (registration, witnesses). Report to the Coast Guard + police. Your liability coverage may apply (with some limitations).
My boat is stolen: what should I do?
1) Report to the police immediately (SQ or municipal), 2) get a report, 3) call your partner firm. A GPS tracker speeds up recovery.
Is the deductible deducted for each claim?
Yes, per claim. If there are several separate incidents, several deductibles may apply.
Will I lose my discount without a claim?
Probably yes, especially for a claim where you are at fault. The discount is usually recovered after 3 to 5 years without a new claim.
How long does it take to be compensated?
Well-documented simple claim: 4 to 8 weeks. Complex: 3 to 12 months. The speed depends on your cooperation (documents provided quickly).
