FPQ 5 for used vehicles: conditions and maximum age in 2026
Contrary to what we often hear, the FPQ 5 is not reserved for new cars. A used vehicle up to 10 model years old may be eligible — here are the exact rules.
Check eligibility for freeMany Quebecers mistakenly think that replacement insurance only applies to new cars. The truth: Quebec Protection Form 5 (FPQ 5) accepts used vehicles, as long as they meet certain specific rules on model year, value and purchase channel.
The official definition of a used vehicle
The FPQ 5 Program defines a used vehicle as a vehicle that has already been owned, registered or put into service, that is not new at the time of purchase, and that fulfills:
- Model year of 10 years or newer ;
- Purchase price of $150,000 or less ;
- Purchased by private sale, OR from a licensed dealer for more than 60 days, OR sold as “new” at a dealer for more than 120 days.
How the insured value is determined
| Purchasing | situationSource of value |
|---|---|
| At a dealer for ≤ 60 days | Priceindicated on the sales contract |
| At a dealership for > 60 days | AutoTrader Value (or equivalent) |
| By AutoTrader Value Private Sale | (or equivalent) |
This rule protects both parties: it prevents a buyer from insuring his vehicle for an inflated amount, and guarantees the insurer an objective basis of compensation. If you paid more than the AutoTrader rating, the difference is not covered.
Coverage periods by model year
| Model year of the vehicle | Qualifying terms |
|---|---|
| Years 1 to 9 | ,24, 36, 48, 60, 72 or 84 months |
| Year 10 | ,24, 36, 48 or 60 months only |
The broker’s advice
If you buy a used vehicle that is more than 5 years old, choose a term that does not exceed the maximum eligible age. Example: a Model Year 7 vehicle with a QPF 5 of 48 months protects until the vehicle reaches Model Year 11 — this is consistent with the Program limit.

Is it really useful on a used vehicle?
Yes, especially in two cases:
🏦 Long-term financing
If you finance your used car over 60-84 months, the loan balance can exceed the cash value for several years. FPQ 5 bridges the gap and avoids assuming debt on a destroyed vehicle.
📉 Vehicle with high depreciation
Some makes and models (high-end SUVs, EVs, trucks) lose 30-40% in 2-3 years. The FPQ 5 guarantees you a value equivalent to the original vehicle.
