Roofing companies are among the most affected and difficult construction trades to insure. A worker’s fall, a fire caused by a blowtorch, water damage during a repair, a poorly installed membrane that leaks after 2 years: the slightest incident can cost tens of thousands of dollars. The RBQ requires $2 million in RCA, but large commercial donors often ask for $5 million with RC work completed — impossible to obtain without a broker who knows the sector.

IN BRIEF

Insurance for roofing companies

Roofing companies (residential, commercial, industrial) accumulate the risks of height, bad weather and installation defects. Documented CNESST prevention program required.

Installation warranty: post-delivery installation defects (infiltrations) must be covered by a workmanship / completed operations warranty of at least 12-24 months.

Essential Roofing Company Protections

Operating liability

Injury to others and property damage during the work. Limits $2 million to $5 million.

Hot work

Explicit coverage for bituminous torch roofing — excluded by default in many policies.

Completed work

Leaks, infiltration, defects in workmanship discovered after the end of the work.

Equipment

Platers, compressors, nailers, scaffolding, trailers, aerial work platforms.

Materials on site

Shingles, membranes, insulation, accessories — anti-theft, fire and vandalism.

Errors & Omissions

Poor evaluation, inadequate product selection, load calculation error.

💡 Broker’s advice

Hot work is the number one cause of fires in roofing companies. Always comply with the NFPA 51B protocol: hot work permit, flame screen, fire extinguisher within range, fire round of at least 60 minutes after the end of the work. Document each round — it’s your best protection in the event of a loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does roofing company insurance cost?
For a company of 3 to 8 roofers with a turnover of $500,000 to $1.5 million: between $2,200 and $7,500 per year for a liability of $2 million. Companies that primarily do hot or commercial roofing typically pay 25-50% more.
Does the RBQ require a specific liability for the roof?
The RBQ requires general liability of $2 million for all specialized contractor licences, including the roofing subcategory. Some home insurance companies require $5 million for contractors to refer to their policyholders following a loss.
Are hot jobs covered automatically?
No — most fonts exclude hot jobs by default. An explicit endorsement mentioning the bituminous roof with a blowtorch is required. Without this amendment, a fire caused by a blowtorch will be excluded.
A membrane installed 2 years ago is leaking — am I responsible?
If the leak is due to a defect in workmanship (poorly welded joints, poorly fixed edges), your completed work liability can intervene for the consequential damage (ceilings, floors, property). Replacement of the membrane itself is usually excluded — at your expense.
Are my employees covered in the event of a fall?
Employee injuries are the responsibility of the CNESST, not your RC. Make sure you have an up-to-date CNESST file. The CNESST may contest your tariff classification if your activities do not correspond to the one declared.
I outsource the shingle installation — am I responsible?
Yes — to your customer, you remain responsible for the work of your subcontractors. Require proof of $2 million liability insurance with you as an additional insured before each contract. Your policy must include the subcontractors’ subsidiary liability.
Are aerial work platforms and scaffolding covered?
Yes, via equipment insurance. Motorized boom lifts (Genie, Skyjack) require separate commercial vehicle coverage when driving on public roads. Fixed scaffolding is covered as business equipment.
A customer refuses to pay and claims me for non-compliant work — what should I do?
A contractual dispute is not covered by your RC. Corporate legal protection (cost $400 to $800/year) covers attorneys’ fees for this type of dispute. Your broker can add it to your policy.
Can I work on commercial roofs over 15m?
Yes, if your policy mentions work at a height of more than 15 m. This addition increases the premium from 10% to 20%. Without this mention, a loss on a building of 5 storeys or more could be excluded.
