Trailer insurance is a specialized policy that covers towed (non-motorized) trailers against damage, theft, fire, vandalism, bad weather and engages your civil liability when the trailer is parked on a campground or at home. Unlike a conventional motorhome, a trailer does not have an engine and depends on a towing vehicle to get around. This creates two very distinct insurance contexts: hitched (partially covered by your car policy) and detached (requires its own policy).
In Quebec, trailer insurance is not mandatory by law, but it is strongly recommended by the AMF and often required by lenders when the trailer is financed. Given the average value of a family trailer ($30,000 to $80,000), an adapted policy costs from $25 per month, which is still marginal compared to the risk of total loss.
The 5 types of trailers and their specificities
The term “trailer” includes several categories of towed caravans. Each one involves different pricing and coverage.
Conventional trailer
Caravan towed by ball hitch. 5 to 11 metres, $15,000 to $80,000. The most common in Quebec. Towable by pick-up or SUV.
5th wheel (fifth-wheel)
Floor hitch on the pick-up box. 8 to 13 metres, $40,000 to $150,000. Very spacious and stable en route.
Hybrid / Tent Trailer
Rigid walls and fabric extensions. 4 to 6 metres, $15,000 to $35,000. Weight/space compromise, ideal for small SUVs.
Ultra-light
Trailer weighing less than 1,500 kg. 4 to 7 metres, $18,000 to $40,000. Towable by sedans and compact SUVs.
Pop-up (teardrop)
Mini caravan in the shape of a teardrop. 3 to 4 metres, $10,000 to $25,000. For adventurous couples.
Toy hauler
Trailer with integrated garage for ATV, motorcycle or personal watercraft. 7 to 12 metres, $50,000 to $120,000.
Is my trailer covered by my car insurance policy?
This is THE question that all caravan owners ask themselves. Short answer: yes, but only partially, and only when harnessed. Here is the rule in detail.
When your trailer is hitched to your towing vehicle and on the move, the liability portion of your automobile policy usually extends to the trailer. In other words, if you cause an accident with the trailer, the damage you cause to others will be covered by your car insurance. But as soon as the trailer is detached and parked (at the campsite, in your backyard, at a friend’s house), it is no longer covered by your standard car policy. Then you need dedicated trailer insurance.
| Situation | Standard car policy | Dedicated trailer policy |
|---|---|---|
| Trailer on the move | Civil liability included | Property damage + liability |
| Collision with Trailer | No Trailer Damage Coverage | Full Coverage |
| Trailer detached to the campsite | Not covered | Damage + theft + site liability |
| Theft of parked trailer | Not covered | Covered for all risks |
| Hail, falling trees, fire | Not covered | Covered with all risks |
| Winter Storage | Uncovered | Covered (frost, rodents, vandalism) |
| Personal Contents Inside | Not Covered | Personal Effects Endorsement |
Costly mistake to avoid
Never assume that your home insurance covers your trailer parked in the backyard. Most home policies exclude RVs and trailers from the scope of coverage, even on your own property. A dedicated trailer font is a must.
Essential coverage of trailer insurance
A good trailer insurance policy in Quebec is built around 6 major coverages, some of which are included automatically and others as an option.
All risks
Covers collision, theft, fire, vandalism, hail, falling trees and natural phenomena. The most comprehensive protection.
Civil liability
Protects if a visitor is injured in your trailer at the campsite (recommended $1 to $2 million).
Personal belongings
Clothing covers, electronics, bikes, BBQ, all contents ($3,000 to $20,000).
Agreed Value
Reimbursement without depreciation in the event of a total loss. Recommended for trailers over $40,000.
Roadside Assistance
Specialized towing and breakdown assistance, essential for 5th wheels and large caravans.
USA Coverage
Territorial extension for extended stays in Florida, Arizona or Texas.
How is the price of trailer insurance calculated?
The premium depends essentially on 7 criteria analysed by our partner insurers. Each can vary the price from 10 to 40%.
Type and length
A 16′ tent trailer costs much less to insure than a 35′ 5th wheel. The market value dictates the replacement cost.
Age and condition
A new trailer is more expensive to insure than a 10-year trailer, but often offers better value in the event of a loss.
Usage
Seasonal (June to September), annual or main residence: the premium can double depending on the frequency of use.
Storage location
Secure indoor storage < private fenced yard < public parking. Insurers often offer 10 to 20% off for protected storage.
Anti-theft devices
Drawbar lock, GPS tracker, locking wheel key: discounts are offered depending on the equipment installed.
Owner Profile
Age, travel trailer driving experience, claims history, bundling with home and auto insurance.
Territory of use
Quebec only, Canada or USA? Extended trips to the south increase the premium by 15 to 30 per cent.

Winter storage of your trailer: points to watch out for
Between November and April, your trailer is usually put into storage. However, nearly 20% of trailer claims occur during the winter. Here are the risks to anticipate and the best practices to adopt:
- Rodents : Mice and field mice love electrical wiring and insulation. Solution: airtight air cap, repellents, traps.
- Frozen pipes : Drain water tanks completely and add non-toxic RV antifreeze.
- Collapse of the roof under the weight of accumulated snow: shovel regularly or use a temporary shelter.
- Theft : a mechanical drawbar lock ($100 to $300) and a GPS tracker ($150 to $400) drastically reduce the risk.
- Water infiltration : check the seals and roof for tightness before storage.
- Vandalism : Prefer a fenced site or indoor storage at a dealership.
Make sure your policy maintains comprehensive and theft coverage during the storage period. Some budget policies reduce coverage during winterization, which can leave you exposed.
Travelling to the USA with your caravan: what you need to know
Many Quebecers go to Florida, Texas or Arizona to winter with their trailer hitched to a pick-up. Before crossing the border, validate these points with your Assur360 broker:
- The maximum duration of U.S. territorial coverage (often 30 days, extendable by amendment).
- Civil liability must be raised to a minimum of $2 million (American lawsuits are expensive).
- Keep your bilingual proof of insurance (often referred to as the “Canadian non-resident inter-province motor vehicle liability insurance card”) on board.
- Purchase separate travel medical insurance ( RAMQ only reimburses a tiny fraction of U.S. hospital costs).
- Think of USA Roadside Assistance, which is rare in basic policies.
What is the advantage of using a caravan for camping?
- Comfort : beds, kitchen, bathroom, heating and air conditioning for a 4-season campsite.
- Flexibility : change your SÉPAQ campsite or Park Canada without disassembling.
- Protection : safe from insects, weather and wildlife.
- Price : much more affordable to buy than a second home or a motorhome.
- Storage : Built-in storage that’s superior to a tent, ideal for long stays.
- Family : private spaces for everyone, while staying together.
- Accessibility : allows the elderly or people with reduced mobility to travel.
- Resale : RV resale market very active in Quebec, solid resale value.
