Simulation tool — indicative result

This calculator provides an estimate based on Quebec averages and the values you enter. It does not take into account taxes (GST/QST), provincial/federal rebates for electric vehicles (Roulez vert, iVZE), or the particularities of your profile. For a purchase decision, consult an AMF-certified dealership, accountant or insurance broker .

Why Sticky Price Is Not the True Price

The purchase price of a car is less than half of what it will cost you over 5 years. Depreciation (loss of value), fuel, insurance, maintenance and interest on financing typically add $25,000 to $50,000 to the initial amount. Comparing two vehicles on the sticky price alone is the first mistake to avoid.

📉

Depreciation 30-50% in 5 years

A new sedan loses ~50% of its value in 5 years. A luxury SUV can reach 60%. An EV varies greatly depending on the model (often 40-55%).

Fuel: $7,000 to $12,000 / 5 years

For 15,000 km/year, count ~$9,000 of gas for a vehicle at 8 L/100 km. An EV at 18 kWh/100 km: ~$1,050 — a huge gap.

🛡️

Insurance: $5,500 / 5 years

A premium of $1,100/year × 5 years = $5,500. Optimizing this position with a broker can reduce by 20-30%, or $1,500+ in savings.

💡 Broker Tip

The most optimisable item in the annual cost of a car is insurance. By comparing 4-5 insurers via a broker, many Quebecers save $200-500/year without reducing their coverage.

Also consider applying for the FPQ-5 (replacement cost protection) if you buy a recent vehicle, and the electric vehicle discount from several insurers.

Frequently asked questions

Does the calculator include taxes (GST/QST)?
Taxes are included in the purchase price you enter (15% in QC). If you have the price before taxes, multiply by 1.15.
What about the Roulez vert / iVZE rebates for electric vehicles?
The calculator does not apply them automatically. If you qualify for a rebate (up to $5,000 provincial + $5,000 federal in 2026), deduct it from the purchase price before entering for a fairer result.
How to estimate the resale value?
Simple rule: ~50% of the new price after 5 years for an average vehicle. For an accurate estimate, check out Auto Trader, Kijiji or the Weekly Guide — look for ads for your 5-year-old model.
What should I do if my vehicle is leased?
The calculator is designed for purchase. For a lease, add up the monthly payments × number of months + residual value if you plan to buy it at the end. The operating costs (gas, insurance, maintenance) are identical to the purchase.
Why is my insurance more expensive than the average calculator?
Several factors: age, gender, postal code, driving record, model (a luxury SUV costs more than a sedan), claim history. Compare with a broker — you could have a big margin to recover.
