What is meant by “the South” in boat insurance?

Usually Florida, the Bahamas and the Caribbean (sometimes a specific latitude area). Your policy includes a navigation territory : it must explicitly include the areas where you sail (coastal cabotage, crossings, offshore sailing).

What protections do I need for the South?
  • Hull & machinery (Hull)agreed value preferred.
  • RC/P&I (Protection & Indemnity) – damage to others, pollution, wreck removal.
  • Rescue & assistance – including towing (Sea Tow/TowBoatUS).
  • Equipment & personal belongings – electronics, dinghy/dinghy, outboard motor, fishing.
  • Wreck removal costs and pollution.
  • Options : driver/crew, private charter, liveaboard, race/regatta (if allowed).
Hurricanes and named storms: Am I covered?

Yes, if your policy includes a hurricane/Named Storm clause. A written hurricane plan (shelter, straps, removal of sails) and a hurricane-rated marina will often be required. “Named storm” deductible and possible special obligations.

Is there a need for an examination/survey to ensure in the South?

Yes, it is mandatory for boat insurance for navigation in the South, a recent survey (3–5 years) and the maintenance list reassure the insurer and improve the conditions.
